Classifying Animals

Classification is a scientific skill scientists use.

Classifying Animals...

…is a system to organize plants and animals around the world. This system uses specific attributes or characteristics to put plants and animals into groups.

identify each animal in one of the following, more common classifications of animals.

Hint: See the Natural History section in the Moonglow appendix.

Characteristics: Amphibians start their life in the water but have lungs to breathe on land.

Extend the lessons

Have the children create a list of other local animals that would also fit into each of the above categories. For example; salamander/amphibian, turtle/reptile, osprey/bird, fox/mammal
